OpenOLAT is brought to you by frentix GmbH, a software company founded by one of the inventors of the original LMS OLAT currently developed at University of Zurich, jointly with the OpenOLAT open source community. OpenOLAT is a fully featured learning management system written in Java. The software is used by universities, schools and companies to deliver e-learning content, to do testing and assessment and to work collaboratively in various learning scenarios.
OpenOLAT will break compatibility with future OLAT releases as from now on the two systems will be developed independently of each other. The two development groups are aiming into different directions in terms of product features, implementation strategies and the way of communication and collaboration within the community members. For us, the community and our clients are our motivation to push the development forward. See our open letter to the OLAT community to learn more about the reasons behind this move. OpenOLAT is compatible up to OLAT 7.2. We added a compatibility layer for course imports for OLAT 7.3, so you can at least import course resources but not import the entire database. Newer OLAT versions contain modified data structures and most likely can't be upgraded to OpenOLAT.
OpenOLAT is licensed under the Apache 2.0 open source license and programmed using Java and the servlet API. Our first independent release is OpenOLAT 8.0 which was released in the beginning of 2012. Currently we are working on forming the OpenOLAT community, building an initial development road map and coding guidelines and setting up the OpenOLAT community membership program. Besides the stable release you can build OpenOLAT yourself at any time in Eclipse from our opened source code repository, see the download section for more information.
